Pestilence: Resurrection macabre

08/10/09  ||  Lord K Philipson

First, great fucken cover and booklet courtesy of Statik Majik. The digipack is fucken ace. That’s some quality work right there. It comes as no surprise that it’s the best thing surrounding this whole fucken deal.

So, Clownshoe Le Grande, Patrick Mameli, returned some time ago with the resurrection of “Pestilence” (a resurrection without van Drunen is not a resurrection – it’s a continuance of a band Momma-Lee killed many years back becoz he obviously hated death metal). How come this came about? Didn’t the absolute SHITFEST known as C-187 sell a single fucken album making it hard to pay the rent? Mameli’s got zero respect from me even though he’s obviously a decent guitarist. Why? Becoz one second he hates death metal and everything it stands for, decides to play hip hop metal – and when that doesn’t work he brings back “Pestilence” (it should always be in quotes when talking about today’s “Pestilence”).

Money hungry much?

“Resurrection macabre” is not terrible (it is soulless and empty though) and it actually bears some riffs that reminds me about the days of old when Pestilence were my personal heroes of death metal. Trust me though, those moments are not many.

Take your jazzy/fusion fucken solos elsewhere for starters. It has nothing to do with death metal. Take your lifeless production out of here and bring the incredibly processed and weak vocals with you. What can stay though is the fantastic drumming of Peter Wildoer. Now that’s a fucken monster right there. I guess bassist Tony Choy could stay as well, but then again I can’t say I hear much of him. Shameful. One of the best bassists in metal and you can’t really spot his work.

Want another proof of today’s “Pestilence” being a joke? How about this title, “Dehydrated II”? Yep, Mameli did it – he named a new song after an old classic, believing adding a “II” to it would make it real cool and innovative.

Trying to cash in on old merits much?

You would think one of those silly things is enough, right? But hey… wait… what’s this? Oh, a re-recording of “Out of the body”? The new material is not strong enough, huh? The original recording is not fantastic as it is, huh? But hey, there’s more… Another 2 classic tracks re-recorded?! Wow… Seriously, don’t let this album stain the fantastic legacy of Pestilence as we know and love them.

And here are a few words from Mameli himself, taken from the website of the band:

“Now we will have a nice and long break to regroup and I have already started working on new material for the upcoming new Pestilence album. It´s so exciting to compose new songs using the RG2228GK ( 8-string ) provided by HOSHINO/IBANEZ. Again, I will try to push the limit to new musical heights. The new material will be nothing like you´ve ever heard before from Pestilence yet I will be trying hard to maintain the Pestilence style to a maximum. By now everybody should be used to the fact that no Pestilence album sounds alike. This new material will be out of this world!!!”

So, another “Pestilence” album then, huh? Patrick Mameli – you have absolutely no heart and no soul.

3,5

On a sidenote, having given this album a few more listens (nope, I don’t fucken know why I did that), I realize the 4 that I gave it in Audio Autopsy’s May edition was too high a score, hence why it’s lowered in this regular review.
